I know they have the grocery store delivery services now, but honestly if you play it right, it’s actually not that bad to go grocery shopping. Hey, it gets you out of the house for a bit, and it doesn’t have to be as frustrating as some make it out to be. You’re already in the right direction by going grocery shopping in the first place instead of eating out, but you can save even more at the checkout register with a few extra tips.
Use the Shopper Rewards Card
While the rewards card may get you the in-store sale promos such as the “10 for $10” or discounts off the retail price, you can also load coupons to your card by going to the store’s website and loading on. The only trick is you have to remember which coupons you loaded to your card so you may need to print out a list so you can make sure you get every item you need. In addition to sales, by using your rewards card you can also build up fuel points that can save you money at the gas pump as well.
Stick to a Grocery List
I know that I’ve gone into the store for eggs, milk, and a random item, and by the time I come out of the store, I’ve forgotten one of the items, but came home with about twenty more that I didn’t need. If you can make a list of everything you need before you leave the house, and stick to it, you’ll be in good shape making it through the store, especially if you can take it a step further and organize your shopping list by section of the store, making it easy to maneuver around without potentially missing an item on your list.
Shop During the Week
If you were to tell me that going mid-week after work, even after dinner, would be a prime time to go grocery shopping just based on the fact that there will not be anyone there compared to a weekend shopping trip I am already in. Another good perk to going during the week are the extra sales that you wouldn’t normally see, because why would the store put more items on sale on the weekend when they know that the store will be packed anyways. Put extra on sale during the week and maybe they can try to get a few more customers.
Don’t Leave on an Empty Stomach
While it’s important to leave the house with a shopping list, it’s also smart to leave when you’re full. If you go to the grocery store on an empty stomach you are just setting yourself up for a disaster. If you have gone to the grocery store on an empty stomach before and you know that everything looks good and you start loading the cart up with whatever sounds good, which will both increase the food budget for the week and would definitely be unhealthy items to increase your waistline, as after all, healthy items don’t sound good when you’re hungry.
